Kickstart DV Editing

Just like cooking, Video editing is a niche work. The more effort you put in, the better the result is. This is a short article about DV editing with minimum hardware. Assume you bought your cool DV Camcorder from Bestbuy or Amazon or from the local store. And you have a decent computer at home with USB ports. Your camcorder supports USB and Firewire connections. To capture video through the USB connection, you will need the accompanying camera software. Some hi-end software may feature built in video editing capabilities too. But most of the consumer grade camcorders are bundled with primitive software components to cut the cost.

Basically Firewire is more convenient then USB 2.0 ports. Because most of the video editing software support Firewire connections and it is supported globally. So buy a simple Firewire card from your local computer store. They cost only a few bucks. The one I have (costs US$8.55), is using Ti Chipset providing two standard Firewire ports and one DV Port. Technically both are same, except for the physical connectors.

Firewire Add-on Card
Most of the firewire cards are bundled with Ulead Video Studio 8 SE and a firewire cable. So you are almost equipped with everything. Just plugin, switch on the system and windows XP will detect the card as a Standard OHCI compliant device. Thats it ! you video editing machine is ready.

Shoot a footage with your camcorder.. plugin the firewire cable and start ULEAD Video studio. Capture video, compose tracks.. edit scenes.. add music from your MP3 collection. You are now a video editor.

What's next?

Become a amateur video editor. Form a production team with your friends. Write a script, shoot it in the weekends.. and produce a home video. Who knows, you could win an award in major video contests! :) Enjoy!
